A Double Quantum fMRI Study of Motor Activation Using a Single-Shot Spiral Data Acquisition at 4T
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction The purpose of this study was to develop a fMRI technique with contrast dependent on intermolecular double quantum coherence (iDQC). Long-range intermolecular multiple quantum coherence phenomena have been observed for several years in solutions [1-3], but an early attempt to use iDQC contrast in vivo gave poor results [4]. A recent study of rat brain demonstrated that zero-quantum coherence produces contrast enhancement between normal and pathogenic tissues [5]. In this study, an improved iDQC imaging sequence based on spiral data acquisition was developed and used for single-shot fMRI study.

FIG. 2. Activation maps (p<0.01) evoked using visual stimulus were acquired at high spatial resolution (0.94x0.94x2mm) (left). Six contiguous slices out of 15 are shown. Activation areas are well localized in the occipital lobe. Activation maps (p<0.01) at three orthogonal planes from the memory task at high resolution (1.46x1.46x1.4mm) (right).Well-defined activation can be observed in the par...

INTRODUCTION – Typical fMRI acquisitions cannot reveal great detail about activated brain regions due to poor image resolution. At present, 64x64 voxels per slice is still the most commonly used acquisition matrix size for fMRI studies, leading to an in-plane resolution of 3.75 mm with FOV = 24 cm. Increasing spatial resolution is very time consuming, e.g. doubling in-plane resolution increases...

Three-dimensional (3D), multi-shot functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data acquisitions are desirable because of higher resolution and reduced susceptibility artifacts, due to shorter readouts and thinner slices. However, 3D multi-shot techniques are more susceptible to physiological noise, which can increase inter-image variance and lead to inaccurate assessment of activation. This w...

The long readout times of single-shot acquisitions and the high field strengths desired for functional MRI (fMRI) using blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast make functional scans sensitive to magnetic field inhomogeneity. If it is not corrected during image reconstruction, field inhomogeneity can cause geometric distortions in the images when Cartesian k-space trajectories are used...

Introduction Single-shot spiral imaging is a very efficient technique to acquire dynamic data for fMRI experiments rapidly and has profound advantages over single-shot EPI as it distributes the burden over two gradient axes. Similar to EPI, spirals suffer from geometric image distortions, T2*-related blurring, and signal dropout/pile-up artifacts. Parallel imaging (PI) has shown great utility t...
